MAC Definition/Meaning:

A project at Massachusetts Institute of Technology to introduce the first practical multiaccess system. The name is an acronym derived from machine-aided cognition (expressing the broad project objective) and multiple-access computer (describing its major tool). The system incorporated not only a new approach to operating systems, but also introduced novel forms of highly interactive compilers and of terminals. See also MULTICS.
